Kamala Harris

 The news has arrived. Joe Biden, The Democratic presidential nominee, has picked his running mate for the United States 2020 election. A vocal Trump-hater, Kamala Harris was chosen as the best woman for the job. Much unlike Joe Biden, many are confused as to who exactly she is.  

Ms. Harris is a Californian attorney, and the first woman of color to appear on a presidential ticket. She has a long history of supporting “Law and Order” politics, having a significant role to play in the infamous War on Drugs. She has also made some controversial rulings involving Black people.

Considering the current negative sentiment towards police (much of it for a good reason), many are upset with this decision. I, personally, see the Biden campaign’s choice as nothing more than an attempt to cleanse their reputation.

Californians and women are already some of the strongest Democratic bases. One large voting bloc that isn’t necessarily friendly with the Democrats is the police. Republicans have painted the Democrats as the police-hating party of chaos. With Kamala Harris as their Vice-President, the Left can attract the fence-sitting authoritarians. 

This, obviously, offers nothing to People who already supported the party. The Biden campaign knew that. Joe Biden has been rising significantly in approval polls, and be took that as a signal to be bold and expand his base. Kamala is the first step in doing that. 


Biden’s pick was a gamble to be sure, but a very safe one at that.

Discord

Any internet user/overzealous parent has had a new platform enter their lives recently. Discord revives both the ancient tradition of chatrooms and caters to the relatively new need to communicate during online gaming. Yet, under that cute logo's exterior lays a dark underbelly of sinister content.  I have been using Discord essentially since it's launch. It came out a year after I set-up my first gaming PC; so, it was the perfect way to yell at my friends while we played. Slowly--though--Discord became less about those with whom I was already acquainted and more about those I wasn't.  As I'd browse Reddit or other social media, I'd notice "join our Discord!" advertisements almost everywhere I went.
