Music
Music is one of the oldest forms of human entertainment. Existing long before the common era, music has long served to bring pleasure to the human ear.
While music may appear a completely ubiquitous pastime--its many variants providing a cultivated experience for any listener-- my experience with music was limited to overhearing the radio in the back of the car.
Despite this, I was constantly asked what my favorite song was. As I often do now, I simply answered with the name that first came to mind. As most of these questions were just a poor attempt at small talk, the line of conversation ended there. I had created a false relationship with familiarity and preference.
This is an example of a larger problem that society has with childhood interactions. Children are expected to respond with a "favorite" for a variety of subjects, but how can we expect a proper response when they have essentially all of their life left to experience?
While this is not inherently disastrous in of itself, it, compounded with other mistakes, eventually creates a world in which the only people that are valued are those that are able to make decisive, categorical decisions on things that they are yet to truly understand.
